EXTRA KITCHENWARE – Please check the kitchen to see if any of the containers, bowls, cake pans or pie plates are yours; we seem to have items that have been left from funerals or potlucks that need to be returned to their rightful owners. Also, please check the refrigerator and freezer as there are food items that should be taken home before the Bazaar because we will need to clean the refrigerators also. SNOW REMOVAL BIDS – The Trustees are seeking bids for snow removal this winter. If anyone is interested in submitting a bid for removal of snow from the parking lot and/or sidewalks, please contact Scott Ruml.
NEW MEMBER RECEPTION – At 11:30 next Sunday we will have a New Member Reception and potluck. Our Evangelism Committee will host the luncheon and the Samaritan Group will be the servers. DID YOU KNOW that LWML Sunday is traditionally held on the 1st Sunday in October in recognition of the outreach and fellowship efforts of the organization? Founding of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League actually goes back more than a century and a half. Beginning in the 1850s, women of the LC-MS started local auxiliaries to meet the needs of people – mending clothes for seminarians, equipping hospitals, establishing schools, developing convalescent and retirement homes, assisting orphanages and residences for people with disabilities, gathering clothing, furniture and food for indigents and funding mission endeavors at home and overseas. Not until the 1920s, however, did members of the congregational societies begin to coordinate their efforts by uniting in state and regional leagues. Oklahoma (in 1928) was the first to do this. Official approval was granted a decade later for a national LC-MS women’s entity.

Richard Weeman (Midweek School). Substitute teachers for this year will be Amy Mors, Kristi Dannenbring and Lisa Andersen. We thank God for providing these teachers who are willing to spend time with our youth to teach them the truths of the Gospel.

THANK YOU to all who donated cleaning supplies and cash to Project Scrub Bucket. Thirteen 5-gallon buckets filled with cleaning supplies were taken to the Orphan Grain Train supply warehouse in Norfolk. The supplies were distributed to individuals who needed help with flood cleanup. Thanks to Pastor for delivering the supplies for the LWML!
NATIONAL BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY is next Sunday, Sept. 18th. Though not an official church holiday, picking a specific date to invite somebody back to worship is a good idea. Numerous surveys show that the most effective way to get delinquent members and non-churched friends to go to church is to have someone close to them personally invite them. Of all the evangelism programs that have come and gone … that have been effective or less so … the one that continually proves itself to work is the gentle reminder given as a personal invitation. You don’t need a lot of training; you don’t need to know a lot of Bible verses; you don’t have to knock on the door of a total stranger. Just reach out to someone you know who doesn’t worship Jesus and ask them to come to church with you. That’s all there is to it. Even though we all know every Sunday ought to be back-to-church Sunday, please make a special effort this week to approach a friend or relative – while there is still time.

The 7th will be the first choir practice. The 11th will be Sunday School Rally Day. The 18th will be the first day of Sunday School and the first Mentor/Mentee meeting of the new year. The 13th will be the first day of our Fall Tuesday Evening Bible class and the 14th will be the first day of Midweek School and the first Confirmation class. Keep your calendar handy so that you don’t miss out on these and other important dates!
CONFIRMAND / PARENT MEETING – There is a mandatory meeting for this year’s confirmation students AND their parents today after the worship service. The first confirmation class will be on Sept. 14th.

14th ANNUAL BIKE FOR LIFE will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, led by Pastor Nabil Nour from Redeemer Lutheran Church, Armor, SD to The Alpha Center, Sioux Falls, SD. As has been in past years, anyone wishing to join the ride, either by bicycle or support vehicle is welcome to do so at any point over the 100 plus mile route. Details about participation will be posted on the Fellowship Hall bulletin board. Lutherans For Life will again serve the noon luncheon for the riders and support vehicle drivers. In addition to the commitments of the time and food items received to date, a sign-up sheet for helpers and additional items will be posted on the bulletin board.
FLEET FOR LITTLE FEET – This year we are pleased to announce that the FLEET FOR LITTLE FEET mobile ultrasound unit will be in the church parking lot on Sept 10th from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to stop by and see the unit that you have been hearing about and so generously helping to support its mission over the past years.
LFL SEMINAR – In addition, Heather Otten from Immanuel Lutheran in Dimock will offer the presentation “Abortion, Only One Question” at 1 p.m. (also on Sept. 10th) with Q & A to follow. As has been in past years, anyone wishing to join the ride, either by bicycle or support vehicle is welcome to do so at any point over the 100 plus mile route. Details about participation will be posted on the Fellowship Hall bulletin board. Lutherans For Life will again serve the noon luncheon for the riders and support vehicle drivers. In addition to the commitments of the time and food items received to date, a sign-up sheet for helpers and additional items will be posted on the bulletin board.

THE BAZAAR COMMITTEEhas started making plans for the November 3rd event, which will run from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Food donations are needed for chili soup, vegetable soup, chicken noodle soup, chicken sandwich meat, tavern, salads, pies, cake, pickles, crackers, & coffee. We will also need workers for the day and evening shifts. We will again have the Country Store, Stitchery/Crafts Booth, and the Lunch Counter. SCHNABEL-MEHLHAFF WEDDING – On Saturday, Sept. 10th, Brian Mehlhaff and Tracey Schnabel will enter the holy estate of matrimony according to God’s Word. They desire our prayers so that they may begin their marriage in God’s Name and with His blessing. We thank the Lord for creating the institution of marriage and ask God continue to bless Brian and Tracey with peace and love. May this couple be in faithful service to our Lord and reflect His love by showing love to and for each other.
SD RIGHT TO LIFE CONVENTION – At 9:30 on September 17th in the Lakota Events Hall in Tea, the South Dakota Right to Life Convention will begin. The day will be filled with pro-life speakers and presenters, and is planned to be done by 5:30. Everyone is encouraged to attend and support this very important organization. Additional convention details are on the flyer posted on the bulletin board.

We ask God to comfort her family in their time of grief with the sure and certain hope of the resurrection of all flesh on the Last Day and the subsequent joyful reunion in heaven of all believers.
EAST AFRICA DROUGHT RELIEF – The worst drought in 60 years is devastating East Africa. According to UN reports, the scarce rainfall has created severe drought and widespread food shortages affecting more than 11 million people principally in Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia. The famine has already killed more than 29,000 children under the age of 5 in southern Somalia alone; hundreds of thousands of more children are acutely malnourished and need help or they, too, will starve to death. To date, LCMS World Relief has given $150,000 in grants for food in the hardest hit areas. Please help, if you can, with a donation now or in the weeks and months ahead. Your donation may be put into the offering plate with a notation for “African Drought Relief” or you may mail your donation directly to: LCMS World Care (African Drought Relief), P. O. Box 66861, St. Louis, MO 63166-6861. If you have any questions, you may call (888) 930-4438.

SUMMER CHILDREN’S MISSION PROJECT – At VBS we began collecting items for Orphan Grain Train’s School Supply Kits. WEEKDAY SCHOOL TEACHER NEEDED – We are in need of a teacher for our 5th and 6th grade Weekday School class. If you are available on Wednesdays after school and are willing to teach, please talk to Lisa, Amber, Cheri or Pastor.
CONFIRMATION PICTURE PROJECT – We are making excellent progress on collecting pictures of our church’s confirmation classes. Of the 78 possible years, we now have 68 class pictures – only 10 years to go and for at least 5 of those years there is a very good chance that they can be located. The 10 missing years are 1932, 1935, 1936, 1941, 1942, 1952, 1967, 1988, 1989 and 1995. If you can help locate any of these class pictures, we will be most grateful. Thanks!
DID YOU KNOW that The Lutheran Service Book, our current hymnal, has turned out to be a tremendous success? About one year ago, CPH reported that the 1 millionth copy of the LSB had been sold; today, well over 1 million copies are in use around the world – and not just by LCMS congregations, either. Our hymnal is being used by other Lutheran church bodies as well as by some non-denominational churches. The Lutheran Hymnal, our former hymnal, was used by about 60% of LCMS congregations. The LSB is currently being used by about 85% of LCMS congregations.
The LSB contains, not only most of the popular hymns from prior hymnals, but is also a great resource for your personal spiritual use. It contains most of the Psalms, daily prayers, a Bible reading schedule, the 3 Creeds of the Christian Church, the Small Catechism, information on the church year and much more. And like any resource, the more you use it and explore its contents, the easier it will be to use and the more comfortable you will feel with it.
The Schwan Food Company headquartered in Marshall, MN provided the funding for the hymnal’s 6 years of development. Rev. Heinrich (Henry) Schwan, a German immigrant born in 1819 and who became a Lutheran pastor, was President of the LCMS from 1878 through

REV. BRIAN BUCKLEW will be ordained and installed at 4:00 this afternoon as the Pastor at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Tripp. He is a recent graduate of Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne and has a dual parish Call to Emmaus and to Zion Lutheran in Delmont.
CANCER DEVOTIONAL – We have received some new devotional booklets entitled “Blessings and Prayers For Those With Cancer.” They are on the revolving pamphlet stand in the narthex.
PARENTS OF PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN – The Samaritan group has assembled activity bags for your children to use during the church service today. Please ask an usher at the rear of the church to assist you in getting one and please return it to the ushers on your way out of church.

DID YOU KNOW that since the Civil War, LCMS pastors have served as military chaplains? Today, LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces supports a total of 214 chaplains. Among these chaplains, 71 are active duty LCMS chaplains and 88 are serving Reserve or National Guard units. Currently, 15 of these Reserve/Guard chaplains are mobilized and serving in the United States, Iraq and Afghanistan. LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces also supports 25 Veterans Administration chaplains, 26 Civil Air Patrol and four chaplains for the Federal Bureau of Prison ministry.
LCMS Ministry to the Armed Forces initiated Operation Barnabas in 2007 in response to the growing needs of returning military personnel. While Operation Barnabas is a network of care to all of our nation’s military members and their families, special emphasis is given to our Reserve members and their families. Why is it called ‘Operation Barnabas?’ Barnabas was Paul’s companion who helped him on his missionary journeys; his name means “son of encouragement.” Operation Barnabas’s goal is to encourage our military and their families with the Gospel in action!
