Announcements 07-31-2011

IN OUR DAILY PRAYERS this week we pray for Leland Zanter (who is now under hospice care) and for his family. In addition, please remember Curt (who has colitis), Ruth (who was recently diagnosed with cancer), Dixie Stone (who is in a coma) and Shana Smidt in your prayers as well as our shut-in members, our inactive members and for at least two people in your life who don’t know Christ.

PROJECT SCRUB BUCKET is a service activity of Orphan Grain Train in response to the current flooding across several Midwest states. The project’s objective is to collect and distribute 5-gallon buckets filled with cleaning supplies for flood cleanup. Through August 7th donations of the following items would be appreciated: 5-gallon buckets, Comet (or other cleansing powder), Lysol (or other liquid cleanser), Windex (or other glass cleanser), bleach, scrub brushes, rubber gloves, sponges, brooms and/or mops, and rolls of paper towel. Our LWML ladies are coordinating the collection of the cleaning supplies and the delivery of them to OGT. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated! For more information please contact Wyona Hofer at 925-7218.

SUMMER CHILDREN’S MISSION PROJECT – At VBS we began collecting items for Orphan Grain Train’s School Supply Kits. We will continue to collect supplies until the opening of Sunday School on September 11th. As you purchase supplies for your own child, we pray that you would also pick up an item or two for this project. If you would like to help out, more information is available in the brochures next to the collection bin. Thank you – The Board of Education

DID YOU KNOW that Martin Luther was one of the first Lutheran hymn writers? He knew that hymns were an important way to teach the Christian faith to the average person. So convinced was he that he wrote at least 36 hymns; we have 24 of them in our current hymnal. His hymns can be divided into 5 major categories. One of these is hymns that are based on the Psalms. As a monk, Luther prayed the entire psalter (all 150 Psalms) – not once per year or per month – but every week! He knew the Psalms forward and backward. He also knew that the Psalms were the hymns of ancient Israel. These were the hymns that Jesus Himself sang! What an obvious choice on which to model your hymn writing! Of Luther’s hymns, 7 are based on Psalms
